Olivia Thirlby, born October 6, 1986
Badassness: Olivia Thirlby was born and raised in New York City, in the East Village. She is Ashkenazi Jewish on her mother’s side. Olivia was passionate about acting from an early age, and trained extensively in Shakespearean acting at the American Globe Theatre and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. While still in high school she was offered her first role as Samantha Marris in The Secret, and was in a series of other 2007 movies and TV shows, including United 93, Kidnapped, and Juno. She has since been in a slew of movies, including the Indie film Nobody Walks, 90s period piece The Wackness, and the 2012 adaptation of Dredd.
Thought still at the beginning of her career, Olivia isn’t afraid to speak up about gender politics in the film world. She has stated that she really values and wants to play “well-rounded [female] characters that have a story and a reason for existing.” She has also said, “I love working with women. Film is a man’s world, and I really appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with women, especially young women.”
Bisexuality: Although she never considered herself closeted, Olivia first talked about her bisexual orientation when she participated in the Self-Evident Truths Project, a civil rights photography project by iO Tillett Wright. Olivia decided to participate because, in her words, “it’s really important for people to be truthful about who they are and fight for equality. We need to help the world usher itself into the next phase.”
She has also said, ”No one should have to hide their sexual orientation. Loving people is a necessary part of being human, and it is very difficult to love people in secret. It’s a horrible thing to force people to do.”
