I have a couple of coin ‘fun facts’ taped up in my cubicle at work, one of which is about Susan B. Anthony being the first actual woman to be honored on a US coin. Multiple times, male coworkers have asked why I don’t have a fact about someone else instead - like John F. Kennedy. It’s such a small thing but to me, it’s so indicative of why feminism is necessary.— Author and numismatist Kaitlin Ward in this week’s Badass Ladies You Should Know profile

Pay It Forward:
Author and numismatist Kaitlin Ward shares some badass ladies we should know
From Kaitlin:
- She has no internet presence to link to,
but I think my sister Jackie is a badass lady. She is a school social worker
which means that, among other things, she has to make a lot of difficult
decisions in the best interest of children who might not have anyone else in
their lives advocating for them but her. I think it’s probably a very rewarding
job but also very exhausting, physically and emotionally, and there’s no way I
could do it.
- I find the ladies of YA Highway to be pretty badass as an entire group. There’s just so much talent and so much greatness as human beings within the group.
- If we can include people we don’t know, I have long admired actress Mayim Bialik, even in instances when I don’t agree with her opinion. She’s a great feminist, and I admire the way that she’s always been open about her religion and her personal beliefs while continuing to be successful as an actress.
- My editor at Adaptive Books, Jordan Hamessley, and my agent, Sarah LaPolla are also both badasses. Not just because they have both been wonderful advocates for my book, but also because they are both so smart and talented and good at what they do.

“Badass Ladies You Should Know” is brought to you by Kate Hart (kdhart), author of AFTER THE FALL, coming January 24, 2017 from Farrar, Straus & Giroux. If you add her book on Goodreads, she will love you forever.
Bleeding Earth was supposed to come out from Egmont last August, and I had already gotten ARCs. I got my first Goodreads review - and it was a bad one - on the day my editor called to tell me the bad news (sidenote: it really takes the sting out of bad reviews when you learn your debut novel may not come out after all). I struggled, even after Bleeding Earth was bought by Adaptive Books. It was hard to feel the same sort of excitement about things that I had at first, because I had never imagined you could get that far in the publishing process and have it taken away.— Author Kaitlin Ward, author of Bleeding Earth, discusses bouncing back from failure in her Badass Ladies You Should Know profile.

Badass Ladies You Should Know:
Author and numismatist Kaitlin Ward
In October 2011, then-aspiring author Kaitlin Ward CC’d me on an email.
“I keep having random thoughts that go with my idea where the earth is bleeding. I still don’t think it makes sense, but I think I might try writing it (not right now, obv, but when I’m done with my current projects) and see if it…becomes something.”
Obviously, we encouraged this idea. And by the end of November, we had this exchange:
Kaitlin: “You guys, this story is getting more disgusting. {scene redacted}”
Kate: “OMG. You should see my face dude. It is like O_O times a zillion. *barfs but in a delighted way*”
This has basically been our friendship for six years now. It’s also a good illustration of why you should read her debut, Bleeding Earth, releasing a week from today from Adaptive Books. Come for the gore and blood, stay for the lesbian characters just trying to survive the disgustingness!
