Badass Ladies You Should Know is an interview series in which talented women say to hell with false modesty. Features are interspersed with links to amazing ladies highlighted elsewhere.

Hosted by Kate Hart, author of After the Fall (January 2017 from Farrar, Straus & Giroux) and reformed “girl who’s not like other girls.” Because screw that. Girls are awesome.

Be supportive. Offer constructive feedback. Take the feedback given to you. Listen. Share. Listen some more. Remember that critical thinking and criticism is not “tearing each other down." Mentoring, kindness, and supporting other women is so key. Find someone you can learn from and someone you can teach.

Pay It Forward:
This week’s Badass Lady, comedian Kate Spencer, shares her picks for badass ladies everyone should know.

Akilah Hughes - Smart and hilarious writer and YouTuber who is always making me think.

Gaby Dunn - I love her videos, but like her tell-it-like-it-is tweets even more.

Roxane Gay (@roxanegay) - A hero of mine. Brilliant, kind, and actually made me come around to Channing Tatum.

Rachel Bloom - She’s making her own TV show for the CW and it’s going to #slay.

Gilli Nissim - A UCB performer in LA who writes and hosts one of the weirdest and best shows I’ve seen in a long time called We’re Gross.

Christine Friar - Her writing is funny and poignant, and her Instagram is a fave.

Heidi Rose Robbins - Heidi is a poet and astrologer and an all-around queen.

Mo Welch - Her Barely Blair comic on Instagram is perfection, and she’s a boss bitch on the basketball court. (Her team The Beatdown is packed with badasses, and they beat my team every time.)

Mary Holland - Mary is just a delightful, magical person to watch perform. She’s on the new show Blunt Talk, and she’s in my book club, and I just adore her.

Brittani Nichols - I loved her pilot, Words With Girls, and her recent mission of saying “no.” She’s also another force of basketball power. (God damn you, The Beatdown!)

Maria Guido - A great editor and writer (and friend). She is fearless, and I admire that a ton.

I think longform improv comedy is such a great teacher when it comes to failure. If you have a terrible show you have no one else to blame but yourselves. And terrible improv shows are the absolute WORST. The audience suffers. The performers are miserable. It’s a total shitshow. Performing weekly (on teams at the UCB Theatre) meant we had to get up week after week and try again, no matter how we did the week before.

Badass Ladies You Should Know:
Comedian, producer, on-air host, editor, and writer Kate Spencer

Kate Spencer has long been high on my list of “funniest but also most thoughtful ladies.” She’s been everywhere: from VH1 to Upright Citizens Brigade, Gawker to College Humor, and Mommyish to Late Night with Conan O'Brien. She also has the greatest basketball team name ever, and an exceptionally cute dog. I’m so excited to share her profile here.

Tired.

katespencer:

Today I am tired.

Today I re-read Michael Eisner’s idiotic comments about how it’s impossible to find women in Hollywood who are both funny AND beautiful. I read comments from people who thought women were whining about Eisner’s comments.

Today I learned that the USA Women’s Soccer Team Cup will get $2 million for winning the World Cup. The men’s winning team (Germany in 2014) gets $35 million. They also make less than the men’s American team, who have never won a World Cup. This, despite the massive success TV ratings success of the women’s tournament.

Today I read about how women aren’t supposed to say “just,” just like we aren’t supposed to say “sorry.” I am tired of my language being policed, of being told what I can and can’t say, how my word choices hold me back rather than the patriarchal structure of our world. I am tired of being told by companies and advertising and media that I should feel bad about my body, and then told I should feel bad for feeling bad. It is an endless cycle of shaming us, and then shaming us some more.

Today I am tired of people believing a rapist, and not the 40+ women who spoke out about his years of assault. I am tired of people only believing rape occurred when the rapist admits to it.

Today I am tired of female celebrities being asked if they are a feminist, and yet no male celebrities are ever asked the same thing.

Someone ask Michael Eisner if he is a feminist. I dare you.

These stories, I read them every day. Today is just another day. Today I am tired, and this is why.
